Warship design should be judged against the need it was built to meet and the missions it actually performed. A successful design also has enough flexibility for the tasks it receives in service. Raw size and firepower cannot settle that judgment. The industrial and strategic conditions that suit an Arleigh Burke to the United States do not automatically suit Australia, India, or South Africa. Swedish destroyers would be poor fits for Royal Navy or U.S. Navy doctrine, yet they could be exceptionally good solutions to Sweden's Baltic defence problem.

Judge destroyers against national needs
Swedish destroyers demonstrate why warship quality depends on missions, industrial capacity, doctrine, and the tasks ships actually perform.
