The force prerequisites behind Fisher's Baltic scheme

Fisher's plan to land Russian troops on Germany's Baltic coast depended on victories at sea and on land that made its apparent opportunity largely illusory.

Notes

Churchill and Fisher wanted the Royal Navy to enter the Baltic and threaten Germany's flank through a large amphibious operation. The proposed force envisioned roughly six hundred ships and landing craft entering the sea, embarking Russian troops, and landing them on the Pomeranian coast. German planners did not consider the concept physically impossible. They judged it viable, however, only after destruction of the High Seas Fleet and a major Russian victory on land. Those remote prerequisites expose the distance between an imaginative amphibious concept and an operationally available option.
