A rapid succession of First World War commands

Dalrymple-Hamilton cycles through Garry, Thorn, Lark, Druid, Murray, and Monster while earning a reputation for speed and aggressive command.

Notes

Between January 1917 and February 1919, Dalrymple-Hamilton held eight commands across six destroyers: Garry, Thorn, Lark, Druid, Murray, and Monster. Temporary transfers kept him employed while ships underwent maintenance or repair, sometimes returning him to his previous command. Druid collided with a trawler, and Murray suffered propeller damage after excessive speed in shallow water. Murray's official report places the incident in May, but an April docking and the temporary transfer to Monster support a proposed reconstruction in which the accident happened in April and the report followed in May. That April date remains an inference from the sequence of appointments and repairs. His reports nevertheless praised the extra speed he obtained from ships grouped with others of similar rated performance. Garry's work with the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla included convoy escort and anti-submarine duties in the English Channel.
