Did the First World War end Britain's imperial power?

A correction separates the British Empire's postwar territorial expansion from the earlier erosion of Britain's position as the unchallenged great power.

Question

Did the First World War cost Britain both its empire and its status as the foremost great power?

Short answer

Not immediately: the empire grew after the war, while Britain's exclusive great-power primacy had already been eroding for years.

Notes

The First World War did not immediately destroy the British Empire; territorially, the empire reached its greatest extent during the 1920s and 1930s. Britain's position as the sole leading great power was a different question. That status had already been under pressure before 1914 as other states expanded their economic and military capacity. The postwar problem was therefore less the disappearance of empire than deciding which rising power would share or challenge Britain's leading position.
