Beach connected the 1960 voyage with the first USS Triton, lost to Japanese destroyers in March 1943, and with his own nearby wartime patrol in USS Trigger. His account reconstructs two convoy attacks, the distant depth charges heard by Trigger, and Japanese evidence that oil and American-marked objects rose after the attack. Beach also traced personal links to officers from the lost boat, including names recorded on its commissioning plaque. The nuclear Triton carried that plaque and held a memorial service near the presumed loss area. Personal experience and the namesake tradition kept wartime losses present for a Cold War crew.
