An Italian first launch reshapes the naval arms race

An early Dante Alighieri could have triggered simultaneous British and German reactions instead of leaving Dreadnought briefly unmatched.

Notes

If Italy had launched the new type first, Britain would have needed to protect its benchmark status and Germany might not have waited for the British response. That could have produced simultaneous national reactions instead of the short interval in which Dreadnought stood largely alone. Britain might even have overreacted with a much larger immediate program. The timing of one credible foreign design opens several different paths for the pre-war naval competition.
