The First Anglo-Dutch War exposed two kinds of sea power

English purpose-built warships dominated home waters, while the Dutch converted larger merchant vessels to project force farther abroad.

Notes

The First Anglo-Dutch War exposed the difference between a concentrated battle fleet and globally distributed commercial capacity. England's large ships of the line were formidable near home, while the Dutch could turn substantial merchant vessels into warships and dispatch them across their trading network. The Dutch response was to build more dedicated warships and prohibit their conversion back into profitable merchantmen. Merchant shipping and naval construction were related sources of maritime strength, but each worked differently.
