The final judgment is concise and firm: this is a good book worth reading and thinking about. That recommendation follows discussions of institutions, intelligence, political judgment, atrocity, and responsibility. The biography offers more than a straightforward life story of one wartime figure. Its value lies in the questions it raises as much as in its narrative.
