A 15,500-ton heavy cruiser against German raiders

A design counterfactual imagines a fast, armoured 15,500-ton eight-inch cruiser entering service in time to hunt German heavy ships.

Notes

The scenario imagines the Second World War delayed until 1942 and a proposed 15,500-ton, eight-inch cruiser crash-built beforehand. Its armour could absorb hits from the German ships, its speed could control the engagement, and its firepower could defeat Deutschland- or Admiral Hipper-class opponents. Germany would therefore need to call on Bismarck or Tirpitz rather than rely on a heavy cruiser or commerce raider. This is a counterfactual design exercise rather than an account of a ship that entered service. The comparison works by combining protection, speed, and firepower instead of isolating one specification.
