Chapter ยท 3:06-4:12

A 4,750-ton presence ship and uncertainty over later flights

The 4,750-ton design is assessed as a basic presence ship, with a substantial planned class and an unsettled design for any following batch.

Notes

The quoted displacement of 4,750 tons places the vessel between the 3,000-ton and 6,000-ton ships mentioned for comparison. Neither a loading condition nor a ton standard accompanies that figure. A substantial class is envisaged, without an exact total, and the design of any second flight remains open. The proposed role is to fly the US Navy flag in waters where a destroyer or carrier battle group is unnecessary. In this interpretation, enough armament for self-defence against a relatively minor threat supports sustained naval presence. Keeping those demands limited is central to the case for the design.
