Lieutenant Commander John Cyril Porte brought experience with Curtiss into Royal Navy service and the Felixstowe programme. He paired Curtiss wings and engines with a British hull developed from his earlier F.1 work. The result was a "battlefield hot rod" assembled from proven parts. The design continued through the F.2, F.3, and F.5 family, reflecting practical experience with landing on, taking off from, and recovering on water.
