Chapter · 23:20-26:40

From reform politics and exile to Chile's naval ministry

Before becoming president, Federico Errázuriz moved through reform politics, exile, and cabinet posts that exposed him to Chile's defence problems.

Notes

Federico Errázuriz Zañartu belonged to a prominent Basque-origin Chilean family and helped found Santiago's Reform Club. Such clubs promoted liberal ideas, parliamentary government, and political discussion rather than serving only as social institutions. After opposing Manuel Montt's government and going into exile in Peru following the 1851 revolution, Errázuriz returned and advanced through national office. He served in Justice and Public Instruction before holding the War and Navy portfolio during the 1860s. That political apprenticeship led to his conclusion that Chile's geography made naval weakness a national danger, and later to his ironclad programme as president.
