Fast tankers became indispensable amphibious ships

Operation Torch reveals how converting prewar fast tankers created capable assault shipping while removing fleet-logistics capacity needed later in the Pacific.

Notes

The Central Task Force included Dale-class tankers that the Royal Navy had ordered before the war as fast fleet-support vessels. Wartime conversion made those hulls so useful as amphibious ships that the Navy did not want to return them to oiling duties. Losses and permanent conversions then left a gap when the Pacific campaign demanded fast tankers again. The example shows how an effective emergency conversion can solve one urgent capability shortage while quietly recreating another elsewhere in the fleet.
