Battlecruisers can exploit high speed most effectively in the large open spaces of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. In narrower waters, high speed leaves less room to turn or stop a heavy ship safely. The same constraint applies in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, Black Sea, North Sea, and especially the Baltic, where geography limits the space in which speed can be converted into tactical freedom. The Francesco Caracciolo design therefore makes more sense as a fast battleship for the Mediterranean than as an oceanic battlecruiser analogue.
