Fascism, communism, and the misuse of political labels

Political labels require definitions, with Italian fascism and the Roman fasces used to explain why fascism did not originate with the Nazis.

Notes

Socialism and communism are treated as distinct concepts, so a socialist policy does not automatically justify calling a party communist. The same caution applies to using fascist as a general insult. Understanding either ideology requires studying its principles and institutions beyond a short summary. Fascism is traced to Mussolini's Italian movement, whose name drew on the Roman fasces, bundles of rods carried before dictators and other magistrates. Nazism is described as a particular form within fascism.
