The Farragut class combined a 5-inch dual-purpose gun with a Mark 10 launcher for Terrier surface-to-air missiles. It was the first class to receive the Mark 112 ASROC launcher from the outset. Mark 32 tubes carried lightweight ASW torpedoes, replacing the 21-inch weapons of earlier destroyers. At roughly 5,800 tons deep load, Farragut had grown substantially beyond the wartime ships and retained capacity for upgrades. Its principal task was defending carrier battle groups.
