Why the Far East cruiser plan unraveled

Explore why the planned Town-class campaign against Japanese trade could not be executed when war reached the Pacific.

Notes

The prewar concept called for the 4th and 5th Cruiser Squadrons to attack Japanese commerce, draw off enemy forces, and buy time for a larger fleet to arrive. By December 1941, European commitments had already absorbed the Town-class ships that would have carried out that campaign. The discussion also argues that the American oil embargo removed much of the maritime target traffic while helping create the crisis that brought Japan into the war. Newcastle's return east in 1943 therefore marks the class's eventual reappearance, but not the execution of the original commerce-war plan.
