Far East channel ambushes for an outnumbered fleet

British planners considered using submarines at successive Far East choke points to weaken an enemy fleet while Royal Navy forces were locally outnumbered.

Notes

Interwar planners expected that British forces in the Far East might begin a war locally outnumbered and without immediate support. A submarine could wait at one point in a channel while others covered successive positions instead of trying to chase a faster fleet. Their attacks could damage or split the approaching force before the main fleet action. Geography and planned positioning therefore supported the T-class requirement for a powerful first salvo.
