Chapter · 1:51-2:41

France’s fall changes Britain’s war

The fall of France leaves Britain carrying the main military burden in a war that can no longer be divided neatly between French land power and British sea power.

Notes

France’s defeat abruptly changes Britain’s war. Britain can no longer rely on friendly control of both sides of the Channel, so the geography of the conflict changes at once. The French Army had been expected to carry most of the continental land fighting while Britain concentrated on maritime warfare. Its collapse destroys that division of labour and forces Britain to reconsider how it will fight the European war.
