Warship and merchant communications in the Falklands

Royal Navy communications were workable, but requisitioned merchant ships sometimes needed instructions delivered physically by helicopter.

Question

How poor were ship communications during the Falklands War?

Short answer

Warship communications were fairly good, but communication with merchant ships could be extremely improvised and difficult.

Notes

Warship communications were fairly good, while merchant ships were much harder to communicate with. In some cases, helicopters flew over merchant vessels and dropped written instructions onto them. This provided a physical means of passing orders when ordinary communication was inadequate. The poor experience therefore concerned the merchant vessels rather than the whole task force.
