Falklands rescue exposes the human cost of sinking

Survivor accounts from the Falklands show how freezing water, exhaustion, and chaotic boat handling continued to kill sailors after the gunfire stopped.

Notes

British crews could see German sailors dying and sinking in the clear, freezing water while trying to recover them. Invincible pulled 98 sailors and seven officers from the sea, but fourteen died that evening. Carnarvon recovered 35 men and three officers, with an officer and seven men dying almost immediately after they came aboard. Survivors struggled to get into boats and out again alongside Carnarvon, where a waterlogged boat capsized and drowned two recovered men. The account gives 190 survivors in total and 592 dead from Gneisenau, including von Spee's younger son. The British battlecruisers lost one man, a reservist aboard Inflexible struck by a shell fragment or a piece of the ship's derrick. Rescue continued to expose men to cold and drowning after they had survived the sinking itself.
