Chapter · 11:45-12:28

A Falklands-style case for battlecruiser superiority

A simulated fight against German cruisers is used to illustrate the historical battlecruiser mission of overwhelming lighter enemy forces rather than seeking a fair duel.

Notes

The unequal simulation is explicitly compared with the Battle of the Falkland Islands and the Royal Navy's intended use of battlecruisers against cruiser forces. Speed, heavy guns, and a rapid secondary battery give the British ships control of the fight. A surviving German light cruiser closes toward torpedo range, entering the short-range threat zone that the four-inch guns are meant to defeat. The British range advantage offers the safer way to finish the engagement. The scenario defines the battlecruiser here as a fast cruiser-killer.
