Falklands deterrence and confused signals

HMS Endurance and the Falklands show how a small ship can symbolize national commitment, and how mixed signals can undo that deterrent effect.

Notes

Patrol vessels, diplomatic visits, and small ships can represent the fleet and national commitment behind them. HMS Endurance mattered less for its isolated combat power than for the larger British capability and political interest it represented. Argentina could read the ship's withdrawal, uncertainty over British carrier policy, and mixed government messages as a combination of disinterest and weakness. Poor coordination inside the British government made the external signal less credible. The Falklands example shows how confused communication and failure to weigh the cost of deterrence can turn a manageable dispute into a far more expensive war.
