Sandy Woodward commanded the carrier battle group in the Falklands, while Fieldhouse held command of the overall task force. Woodward was for a time the senior officer in the south, before Major General Jeremy Moore arrived. That seniority did not give him command over Michael Clapp's amphibious group or Julian Thompson's brigade, which belonged to separate task-group commands. Rank and responsibility therefore have to be distinguished when tracing the command structure. The absence of a deployed task-force commander above these groups complicated coordination in the south.

Woodward's Falklands command covered the carrier battle group
Woodward's temporary seniority in the south did not place Clapp and Thompson under his command. Fieldhouse commanded the task force, while Woodward led its carrier battle group.
