Do Britain's current contingency plans solve the reinforcement problem for the Falklands and Pitcairn?
Short answerOnly partly: Mount Pleasant helps the Falklands, but heavy equipment still needs sea lift, while Pitcairn lacks both an airfield and easy beaches.
NotesThe Falklands are discussed as better prepared than in 1982 because of the major airfield at Mount Pleasant, but the answer questions how quickly heavy forces can really be moved by air. Even moving armoured vehicles and their supporting equipment can consume several large transport aircraft. That creates a continuing need for sealift capable of delivering heavy forces after the first airborne reinforcement. Pitcairn presents a still harder case because it lacks a landing strip and has exceptionally difficult beaches, making access a maritime problem for any force.
