Falkland Islanders complicate the language of decolonisation

Competing British and Argentine sovereignty claims do not remove the political problem that the islands' resident population has repeatedly rejected Argentine rule.

Notes

The leaseback discussion leads to the people who would live under any settlement. Argentina grounds its claim in the inheritance of Spanish colonial territory, while Britain also has historical claims whose details vary across the islands. The present population is overwhelmingly British in identity and has voted against becoming Argentine. Transferring the islands in the name of decolonisation would therefore impose another state's rule on a population that does not consent to it.
