The Fairmile C was an explicit attempt to make a motor gun boat from the Fairmile lineage rather than merely modify an existing patrol craft. Its designed armament combined two quick-firing two-pounders with heavy and rifle-calibre machine guns, while wartime service added as many as six 20 mm cannon and retained depth charges. The modified hull reached about 26 knots and had a range of roughly 500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Only 24 were completed, of which five were lost, making the type much less numerous than the Fairmile B. The priority was now a dense gun fit for close, fast encounters rather than dependence on torpedo attack.

The Fairmile C recast the earlier hull as a motor gun boat, rapidly accumulating 20 mm cannon and depth charges alongside its pom-pom armament.
