Three aircraft derived from the Fairey III Mark IV were converted into remotely controlled Fairey Queen flying targets. Their level, predictable flight gave anti-aircraft crews something more realistic to engage than a classroom exercise. The drill did more than record hits or misses. Repeated firing built confidence that weapons, crews, and procedures would function together in wartime. The target drone linked experimental aircraft development to a wider naval training system.
