The Fairey III served with a wide range of countries, and Royal Navy examples helped advertise British reach in Adriatic waters. Because a seaplane could launch from a cruiser, fly ahead, and land on calm water, its crew could call at a port without the parent ship entering. Senior officers sometimes made deliberately conspicuous appearances near Italian harbours. Their value was political as much as operational: they reminded local powers that British ships and aircraft could reach the area. These flights let one aircraft enlarge the visible footprint of a deployed cruiser.
