Arkansas entered the engagement with one engine disabled, many men hospitalized, and only enough fit crew to serve two cannon. The Union plan nevertheless committed just three poorly coordinated vessels under the Vicksburg defenses. Essex's close-range exchange achieved little, while Queen of the West rammed Arkansas but grounded in the attempt. The failure demonstrates how an overwhelming material advantage can be wasted by weak concentration and timing.
