The F3F as a durable American carrier fighter

The Grumman F3F gave the U.S. Navy a dependable fighter and helped establish the lineage that led to later Grumman carrier aircraft.

Notes

The F3F was a tough and capable carrier fighter for its date, although it preceded the major wartime combat types. Its speed, climb, range, armament, and ability to carry small bombs all had practical value. Its greater historical importance lies in giving the U.S. Navy a reliable base from which the Wildcat and later Grumman designs could develop. Its high-altitude performance also illustrates why fleet fighters had to intercept reconnaissance aircraft above the heights where most naval air combat occurred: denying an enemy scout its report was part of the information battle.
