Why Germany's F126 sensor suite needs more weapons

A comment on Germany's large F126 frigates prompts an explanation of the mismatch between an advanced sensor suite and a light missile fit.

Question

Does the F126 carry an excessive sensor fit for its planned gun and missile armament?

Short answer

Yes. Its sensors appear far more capable than its weapon load, leaving a sensor-hub role that depends on other ships.

Notes

The proposed ship carries an impressive sensor suite but too few weapons to use it independently. Its planned fit consists of one gun, sixteen vertical-launch cells, eight anti-ship missiles, and a small group of close-range defences on a roughly 10,000-ton hull. A sensor-hub concept works only if nearby allies carry enough missiles to act on its data. The best-armed allied ships, however, often have capable sensors of their own. The F126 therefore raises a force-structure question: does an expensive sensing platform have enough organic firepower, or a clear enough fleet role, to justify its size?
