Reading Crusader kill and loss claims carefully

The episode gives the F-8 a 19-to-3 air-combat record, then separates that claim from disputed Vietnamese tallies and the aircraft's much larger losses to ground fire and accidents.

Notes

For twelve engagements during June and July 1966, Crusaders claimed four MiG-17s for two losses. The wider American air-combat tally given here is nineteen victories, sixteen MiG-17s and three MiG-21s, against three F-8s lost in aerial combat. Vietnamese claims of eleven Crusaders show the difficulty of reconciling wartime tallies when explosions, damage, surface-to-air missiles, and incomplete observation complicate attribution. In this account, the number of aircraft returning to American carriers supports the lower air-to-air loss total, and all three confirmed aerial losses occurred in 1966 to MiG-17 cannon. The ratio does not represent the type's whole wartime cost: the quoted overall loss is 170 Crusaders, mostly to ground fire and accidents.
