From the F-14B engines to the F-14D sensor suite

Reconnaissance and warning improvements led into the better engines of the F-14B and the radar, networking, jamming, infrared sensing, and new-build airframes of the F-14D.

Notes

Operational experience first produced the K-93 LOROP standoff-imagery system, expanded chaff capacity, and temporary radar-warning receivers. The new engines then made the F-14B the major propulsion upgrade, while the ALR-67 gave crews a stronger warning system. The F-14D followed with the APG-71 radar, tactical data distribution, a self-protection jammer, infrared search and track, and improved ejection seats. Its thirty-seven new-build airframes mattered as much as the electronics because they renewed the fleet rather than merely extending worn aircraft. The sequence shows modernization working through propulsion, survivability, sensing, networking, and structural life together.
