How expertise changes what a campaign history provides

A sound, award-winning history of the Norwegian campaign can still disappoint a reader who already knows the subject in depth.

Notes

The Cambridge volume is informative, readable, and worth buying, especially as a recent concise account of the Norwegian campaign. Its author and editors nevertheless seemed to promise greater analytical depth, and several operational judgments invite more maps or explanation. That personal disappointment does not make the book bad: specialist knowledge raises the threshold for something to feel revelatory. The passage offers a useful lesson in judging military-history books according to their intended level and the reader's existing knowledge.
