Exocet, USS Stark and unexpected threat suppliers

The Falklands War and USS Stark illustrate allied-origin weapons becoming threats and the importance of readiness when interpreting a hit.

Notes

Exocet links the Falklands War with the 1987 attack on USS Stark. These cases involved a missile from an allied supplier rather than the Soviet systems dominating much Cold War planning. Changing relationships complicate assumptions about the weapons a navy will encounter. Exocet's combat record is also suggested as a reason for its appeal to countries including China. Stark's case is qualified by the account that she was alone and her defences were in standby because she was expected to be safe. Her readiness and circumstances therefore matter when judging the performance of her weapons.
