Exeter buys Harwood's divided force twenty minutes

Exeter's continued resistance buys Harwood the time needed for Ajax and Achilles to exploit speed, numbers, and separated bearings.

Notes

Exeter's resistance buys roughly twenty minutes for Harwood's divided formation to turn numbers and speed into tactical leverage. The Deutschland class is treated here as heavy cruisers while acknowledging the familiar 'pocket battleship' label; either way, Harwood's plan assumes the German ship is strongest when it can hold a concentrated enemy at long range. Because the British cruisers attack from separated bearings, any turn that opens the range from one threat closes the range to another. Exeter remains dangerous because her after turret still fires, she keeps moving aggressively, and Captain Bell is prepared to use torpedoes or ram. Langsdorff therefore cannot safely close to finish the damaged ship without exposing Graf Spee to Ajax and Achilles. Exeter's survival becomes the time-buying centre of Harwood's tactical design.
