Executive-officer and diplomatic training

Years as a senior lieutenant turned Farragut's small-ship command experience into preparation for larger crews, diplomacy, and trusted independent work.

Notes

After Ferret, Farragut moved to the larger frigate Brandywine and spent roughly twelve years in executive-officer roles. Selection for Brandywine's voyage carrying the Marquis de Lafayette home also linked diplomatic service with the Revolutionary-era reputations represented aboard. These appointments required him to manage crews, represent captains ashore, and be ready to assume command during illness or crisis. His later command of USS Erie combined rescue work with the protection of American interests during a French blockade of Mexican ports, reinforcing the diplomatic side of his career.
