Common systems and different hulls for the European Patrol Corvette

Mediterranean and Arctic operating requirements could lead European Patrol Corvette partners to share sensors and software while choosing different hulls.

Question

What is likely to happen to the European Patrol Corvette programme?

Short answer

It may become a common-systems project with divergent hulls, because the participating navies have sharply different operational needs.

Notes

The European Patrol Corvette brings together navies with different operating requirements. Denmark's patrol commitments around Greenland demand a ship suited to Arctic conditions, whereas the principal French, Italian, Spanish and Greek requirements arise elsewhere. Denmark could therefore adopt shared systems while retaining its own hull design. The January 2025 assessment questions whether the intended 2030 service date is supported by enough visible contracting progress after the design phases. Long-range patrol and combat variants already allow differences within the programme. One possible outcome resembles the Horizon and Type 45 split: cooperation survives in systems even when partners choose different ships.
