Chapter · 24:32-29:08

Europa and Giuseppe Miraglia compared

The newer Giuseppe Miraglia used a train-ferry hull, higher speed, armor, greater aircraft capacity, and a catapult to improve on Europa's mobile-base concept.

Notes

The ships were similar in broad dimensions, but Miraglia could make about twenty-one knots and launch aircraft by catapult while under way. She also carried armor and a larger aircraft group, giving the newer conversion more capability at the outset of a distant deployment. Her stable train-ferry design was well suited to carrying heavy loads high in the hull, because the original ship had been intended to support rail vehicles. Europa was longer and could reach a similar displacement, yet used that volume less efficiently. Miraglia's larger embarked group reflected an expectation that she would establish aviation support farther from Italy and bring more stores before reinforcements flew out.
