Chapter · 52:50-54:39

Europa moves crews, serves at the Dardanelles, and finds a civilian afterlife

Europa's career joined routine relief-crew transport to Atlantic command work and a battle-honored deployment supporting the Dardanelles campaign.

Notes

Europa's early service included carrying relief crews to and from the Mediterranean and Australian stations, an essential but easily overlooked function of a global fleet. A 1902 refit with new boilers prepared her for further service before periods in reserve and the Third Fleet. During the First World War she became flagship of the 9th Cruiser Squadron in the Atlantic. She then served from Mudros during the Dardanelles campaign and received a battle honour for that work. Sold for conversion into an emigrant carrier, she sank in a gale off Corsica before the civilian project could succeed.
