Ethics can require more than best practice

A short caution separates accepted best practice from the ethically right action when procedure and judgment no longer align.

Notes

Best practice is the accepted correct procedure; ethics concerns the judgment about what is right. The two should ordinarily support each other. When accepted practice goes astray, the researcher still has to decide whether following it is ethically defensible. Following an accepted method does not remove personal responsibility.
