Essex's endurance for an advance across the Pacific

Essex's quoted 20,000-nautical-mile range served a campaign with different supply requirements from British and Japanese plans.

Notes

The quoted Essex displacement rises from 31,300 tons standard to 36,960 tons fully loaded, illustrating the weight carried in supplies and fuel. A stated range of 20,000 nautical miles at 15 knots supported an American advance across the Pacific. Britain could assign more space to other needs because its plan relied on bases and fuel stocks along the route. Japan likewise did not design these operations around a full carrier strike against the American West Coast. Endurance figures therefore reflect the intended campaign and its supply system; they are also quoted at different speeds for the three classes.
