Esquimalt's Canadian government dry dock gave the Royal Navy and later Canadian forces a repair point on the Pacific coast of North America. Although the 1909 base was modest, its location worried American planners more than British officials emphasized it. Auckland's Calliope Dock supplied a corresponding facility in New Zealand waters. Originally about 160 metres long, Calliope was extended repeatedly in 1936, 1943, and 1996, allowing the old dock to remain useful as ships grew. These sites made global deployment more credible by giving damaged ships regional alternatives to a voyage back to Britain.
