When wing turrets made grudging sense

The compact, economy-driven España class is offered as a rare case in which wing turrets were an understandable compromise.

Notes

The España class makes a qualified case for wing turrets. The ships were unusually small for dreadnoughts and their designers were trying to control cost. Those constraints made an otherwise awkward arrangement more defensible than it was on larger hulls. A superfiring layout might still have been better, which keeps this an understandable compromise rather than an ideal design.
