Esmeralda and most of the Chilean Navy backed the Congressional rebellion against the presidential faction. She performed cruiser tasks, including searching for the corvette Abtao and two Almirante Lynch-class torpedo boats. She then joined the northern blockade and port-control campaign. Chile's long coastline made that naval mobility a source of political and military leverage.
