Escort warfare rewarded presence more than individual power

Corvettes represented the opposite end of naval warfare from elite destroyers: enough modest ships had to be present everywhere trade required protection.

Notes

Hard-fighting fleet destroyers and escorts built for the numbers game met different naval needs. Against submarines, a convoy often benefited more from having several modest ships in position than from concentrating a few heavily armed vessels elsewhere. A surfaced submarine could face several escorts acting together. The Bathursts mattered because enough were available to escort trade wherever protection was needed.
