Escort momentum could magnify early U-boat losses

Existing British escort orders combined with slower German submarine growth could make each early U-boat loss more damaging.

Notes

Hunt and Flower production continues in this scenario because their orders mostly used capacity separate from the large hulls. Harland and Wolff is the principal overlapping builder considered, but its Flower work mostly uses auxiliary spaces. German surface-fleet work competes with U-boats for resources. Traffic analysis, even apart from reading Enigma messages, could steer important convoys away from submarines and place strong escorts where contact is likely. With fewer U-boats, each early loss removes a larger share of the experienced training nucleus needed for expansion. The German destroyer losses in Norway illustrate that institutional cost.
