Anti-submarine success came from a cumulative system rather than a single technical breakthrough. Earlier investment became especially visible from 1942, when new units arrived in enough numbers to enlarge convoy screens. Surface-ship survivors could often be recovered after a sinking, allowing anti-submarine experience to accumulate in a way that was far less common for lost U-boat crews. Hedgehog, Squid, and improved ASDIC gave those increasingly experienced escorts better ways to turn a contact into an attack. Personnel, production, and technology reinforced one another.
