Why one escort design could not suit every station

Theatre geography forced escort designers to trade shallow-water handling and compact size against the range and seaworthiness needed in the Far East or North Atlantic.

Notes

The Royal Navy could not treat a Mediterranean escort as a universal design. A smaller, shorter-ranged ship could manoeuvre effectively in shallow enclosed waters, but it would struggle to cover the distances of the China Station. The North Sea and North Atlantic imposed another set of endurance and seakeeping demands. Global commitments therefore made standardization difficult even before weapons and sensors were considered.
